The article is based on the TED talk by Cindy Foley which we have embedded.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjIzNTIlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTAlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGY2t4aUpEbmxtZUElM0ZyZWwlM0QwJTIyJTIwZnJhbWVib3JkZXIlM0QlMjIwJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”why is boredom important?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]The premise of the TED talk is that our kids are over-scheduled and/or over-entertained, in the moments that they aren’t ‘doing’ something, their attention is taken by TV, games consoles and iPads. The speaker argues that this stifles creativity¬†because creativity is born out of boredom.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]It seems too that schools are failing our children in the creativity department too. In this now very famous TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson, he claims that schools are killing creativity, in the quest for conformity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjIzNTIlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGaUc5Q0U1NXdidFklM0ZyZWwlM0QwJTIyJTIwZnJhbWVib3JkZXIlM0QlMjIwJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Why is this such a big problem? This is a problem because our children face two huge issues when they become adults in terms of competition for jobs:

  1. they will have to compete with huge numbers of well-educated others in a global, network connected job market

  2. automation is taking even the nice well-paid white-collar jobs that we enjoyed

So one of the ways that they will be able to stand out and compete is by doing work that others (humans and machines) can’t. ¬†Creativity is one of these types of work.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”so how to teach our kids?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]The answer is a simple one- do nothing. One day this weekend, turn everything off. No sports, walks, TV, internet or electronic devices and let the kids dictate what happens. You could paint, build something, teach the kids to cook anything that involves the use of their brain.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”the daily lifehack summary” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1466255066708{border-top-width: 3px !important;border-right-width: 3px !important;border-bottom-width: 3px !important;border-left-width: 3px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 40px !important;background-color: #ce879f !important;border-left-color: #58646d !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #58646d !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #58646d !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #58646d !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;}”]

Give your kids the gift of boredom.

Stage 1: Pick one day next weekend, switch off all electronic devices for the whole family
Stage 2:Let the kids decide what to do- it has to be creative.
