The ‘right’ type of question begins with “How can…..?”

Too often people start their train of thought by using a ‘Why?’ question. This question asks your brain to justify a position and in doing so, it will come up with reasons and excuses.  In the right circumstances, this can be useful, however when you are looking for a solution or to make a change of some sorts, this is absolutely the wrong path to go down.

As an example, compare these 2 questions:

  1. Why can’t (insert name) do their homework?

  2. How can we create a situation where (insert name) does their homework?

Same problem but different questions produce entirely different trains of thought. Question one instructs your brain to tell you the reasons why whereas question two, tells your brain to look for solutions to your stated objective.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”why is this important?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]Steve Jobs very famously said-

Creativity is just connecting things.

In order to stand out from the competition when they become adults, our kids will need to be able to solve problems and add value. They will need to be able to connect dots in a way that others can’t see. You have to practice this skill, in order to become good at it. So we should be using this questioning technique with our kids regularly so that it becomes second nature, we need to train our kids to think in this way that helps them be solution orientated, so that they can start to connect the dots.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”so how to teach our kids?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]Firstly, when you hear the word WHY? see if you can turn the question into a HOW CAN? instead.

Secondly, you can start asking HOW CAN questions more with your kids:

How can we… afford a holiday this year?

How can we… get to school on time each morning with no shouting and screaming?

How can we… do our weekly shop and save 20%?

Etc…

Get them involved and get them to help find the solution, you’ll be amazed at the ideas they come up with and because they have been part of the solution process, they will be much more inclined and motivated to see it through![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”the daily lifehack summary” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1467326573728{border-top-width: 3px !important;border-right-width: 3px !important;border-bottom-width: 3px !important;border-left-width: 3px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 40px !important;background-color: #ce879f !important;border-left-color: #58646d !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #58646d !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #58646d !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #58646d !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;}”]

Teach your kids to ask the right type of question:

Exercise 1:  Listen out for the word WHY? see if it can be turned into a HOW CAN? instead.
Exercise 2: Ask lots of HOW CAN? questions of your kids, get them used to this as a way to find solutions.
