We saw that on a T-shirt once and it made us laugh, probably because it rang true- we are prone to the odd bout of procrastination here at Lifehacksforkids towers.

I guess we are not alone either, so whenever we are in the ‘procrastination zone’ we do the technique we describe below.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”why is this important?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]Not sure this needs any explanation, suffice to say people who get stuff ‘done’ will always be in demand, so it’s a useful trait to help our kids develop and will contribute to their success as adults.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”so how to teach our kids?” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text]We’ve tried lots of different methods over the years, colour coded To Do lists, deep philosophical self-questioning, planning our day to the nth degree, however we’ve found that simplicity is best.

Our technique is based on the famous Pomodoro Technique, which if you aren’t aware uses 25minute segments to help you do things and become more productive. This works for us because we can get our head around allocating a segment of time to a task and then once you’ve actually started the thing, strangely enough, you manage to get it done.

We tend to use 45minute segments of time, followed by a 15-minute break. If you have younger kids then you might want to use smaller time segments- it just depends on how long they can concentrate for.

Before you start, the key is to obtain agreement from your child that they are willing to commit the time (see Daily Hack 2 as to why this word is so important)- once that’s done, the rest is easy!

Set a timer for the correct and agreed amount of time and just START the task- anyway or anyhow you can. Once the task is started, the brain will take over and work out the best way of doing it. It’s important to make sure that there are NO distractions. Electronic devices should be off and out of reach, if your child is working on a computer, then only the necessary tabs or programs should be open.

It’s great to work your way through a To Do list, or revision schedule in this way- don’t over-think things, just take the top task and spend the allocated time slot on it. You’ll find that you get a lot more done that way.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_custom_heading text=”the daily lifehack summary” font_container=”tag:h4|text_align:left|color:%23ce879f” google_fonts=”font_family:Oswald%3A300%2Cregular%2C700|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1468311048036{border-top-width: 3px !important;border-right-width: 3px !important;border-bottom-width: 3px !important;border-left-width: 3px !important;padding-top: 40px !important;padding-right: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;padding-left: 40px !important;background-color: #ce879f !important;border-left-color: #58646d !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #58646d !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #58646d !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #58646d !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;}”]

Teach your kids to become unstuck:

Step 1:  Decide on the tasks that need doing.
Step 2: Confirm willingness to allocate the time (and the amount of time).
Step 3: Start the timer.
Step 4: NO DISTRACTIONS- they can wait.
