lesson 1: why perseverance is important
the power of perseverance
At first, no one would listen.
Now, almost 2 years later, the whole world is.
At first, she was on her own.
Now, more than 13 million people in 228 countries have joined in.
In August 2018, Greta Thunberg started a school strike for the climate outside the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm.
She tried to persuade other kids to join her, but no one else was interested.
She felt passionately that something had to be done, so she decided to go ahead and do it on her own anyway.
Since then, the idea she had- the movement she started- Fridays For Future has spread all over the world.
And according to TIME magazine, on March 15 2019, 1.6 million people in 133 countries joined in a climate strike inspired by Greta Thunberg’s actions.
Some students walked out of school for a few minutes, some for an hour and some for a full day of protest.
Greta has spoken at climate rallies all over the world, she has given a speech at the United Nations, spoken with the Pope and addressed MP's at the UK Parliament.
Her TED talk has been watched more than 4 million times.
Greta Thunberg is a fantastic example of PERSEVERANCE.
When she started her mission to save the planet, she was alone.
She needed huge amount of PERSEVERANCE to keep going when no one was listening.
But what made her keep going when it seemed a lot easier to quit?
What makes people decide to PERSEVERE?

PERSEVERANCE is not random.
And it's not to be confused with willpower either.
Developing a strong mind to help you take the right action is important, however you will soon give in unless you have a clear idea of 3 things:
- 1you need a PURPOSE
- 2you need a clear GOAL
- 3you need to make PROGRESS
In order to PERSEVERE you need all three of these.
As you will see in the next lesson Greta has all 3 of these working in harmony, which is one of the reasons why she was so successful.
Why do people start a journey?
Why do they keep going?
It's because they have a reason (or reasons) to.
Otherwise known as a PURPOSE.
