parent by design:

be a better parent using your values

“There was an exhausted woodcutter who kept wasting time and energy chopping wood with a blunt axe because he did not have the time, he said, to stop and sharpen the blade.”
- Anthony de Mello

sharpen your blade

No doubt, we'd all like to be a better parent, but what does that actually mean?

Your idea of what better is will be unique to you, but how do you find out what that is?

This exercise helps you to put that into words and develop a plan to help you turn your thoughts into something you can work on: a plan of action.

It does this by helping you to discover your VALUES.

your values

Your values are the unconscious framework upon which your whole life is built.

They are the fundamental building blocks of who you are as a person and they form the blueprint for how you live your life and the lens through which you interact with the world.

They are the hidden motivators behind everything, from the job you do, who your friends are, your political persuasion, whether you marry and to whom, the type of car you drive, and most importantly, how you raise your kids.

how knowing them helps

When you know your values you start to live your life according to what is important.

Let's imagine that one of your key values is 'to spend quality time with your kids'.

And, after a long, tiring day at work your child asks you to read a book with them.

Instead of fobbing them off, your values filter kicks in- you put down your phone and spend some quality time reading together.

By doing this, not only are you being a better parent to your child, you feel much better about yourself too.

However, it's not enough just to know what your values are, you have to be aware of them in the moment, and the only way to do that is to work on them and to keep them front of mind.
