Resilience: a Boot Camp for your kids

Module 1: What is Resilience?

Parent/ Caregiver notes and tips.

welcome

Hello and welcome to your first module, thank you for being here.

We hope that you and your child enjoy learning all about RESILIENCE together.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please get in touch... we would love to hear from you.

purpose of the module

American psychologist Brandon Lewis: "The first step towards change is awareness."

Awareness is our objective and by the end of the lesson your child will:

  • check
Understand what resilience is and why it is important that they learn it.
  • check
Recognise what resilient behaviour looks like, so that they can behave resiliently.
  • check
Be challenged to practice being resilient in the real world.

activity 1:
what to expect

Your child gets to 'interrogate' you about two of your experiences of resilience- a successful one and an unsuccessful one.

There's much that they can learn from both and kids also love hearing how you screwed up (funnily enough).

To be fully prepared, take a minute now and think about a successful and an unsuccessful personal experience of resilience that you can talk about.

activity 1:
some tips

It's definitely worth thinking in advance about the message that you want your kids to get from your experiences, for us we wanted them to understand that:

  • check
The decisions you make today have an impact on the person you become.
  • check
You have to practice being resilient each and every day until it becomes a habit.
  • check
It's difficult to suddenly be resilient as an adult, if you've never been it as a kid.
  • check
It's important to keep going and not give up, even when things are difficult.

Please feel free to use these, or add to them in any way.

activity 2:
what to expect

This is a little quiz that will test what your child has learned about resilience during the module.

It's easy to do and it's designed really to be a fun recap of what they have learned.

7 DAY CHALLENGE:
what to expect

Each week we have a challenge for your kids to complete. We want them to take what they've learned in each module and practice it in the real world.

This week's challenge requires them to display one of the resilience characteristics listed on their activity sheet each day for 7 days, and to check them off.

We want to create successful momentum, which is why we start with just one a day.

7 DAY CHALLENGE:
some tips

  • check
Print out the sheet and stick it somewhere that can be seen (fridge is always good).
  • check
Help build their confidence, look for displays of resilience no matter how small.
  • check
Ask them when they get home from school if they can tick any behaviours off.
  • check
This first bit is absolutely crucial. If you can set your child up for a quick win, they are more likely to be motivated to keep going.
  • check
See if you can get them to display a different characteristic each day.

beyond the module

Once the module is complete, your child can click through to the SUCCESS ZONE, an area with games, jigsaws, videos and other fun stuff for them to learn more.

Beyond that, we found that talking about resilience in reference to what happens, very useful. Whether that be something they do, or you did, something that happened at school, or to a character in a book or film, each and every day there will be incidents that you can view through the lens of 'resilience'.

We've also created a YouTube playlist about resilience, and for younger kids, we recommend heading over to classdojo, they have some nice videos about Perseverance.

ready to go?

Ok, that's it.

Sit down with your child because... it's time to start the 1st module.

Good luck and have fun!
